Corrèze, Tulle

and The Monedieres Massif

·        TULLE is the town of lace – "Tulle lace" – as well as of the accordion. Medieval district: 15th and 16th architectural heritage.

o   Market days: Wednesday and Saturday.

o   The Musée du Cloître has a magnificent collection of nearly a hundred accordions, dating from 1829 to the present day.

o   The Festival des nuits de nacre (accordion festival) takes place in the second half of September.

o   Visit the Maugein accordion workshop, the only company (since 1918) specialising in making accordions.

·        GIMEL LES CASCADES, a place for walks :

o   the Monedières Massif, covered with heather and bilberries, is great place to walk : Suc au May (908 m – panorama),

o   the village of Chaumeil.

·        SARRAN :

o   the President Jacques Chirac Museum displays a selection of 200 presents from all over the world received by the President.

·        TREIGNAC :

 

o   It's an historic city. To discover and taste real chocolate, a visit to the "Comptoir au Chocolat" (chocolate shop) is a must.

 

o   Market days: Tuesday and Saturday mornings.

The Plateau de Millevaches landscape

and the Dordogne gorges ...

 

 

·        Bort les Orgues :

 

With 1000 hectares spread over 21 km, this is one of the largest reservoirs in France.

o   Les Orgues : a 2 km-long succession of gigantic columns of volcanic lava, 80-100 m high; the Chateau de Val (15th century).

 

·        Meymac :

 

A village of granite houses and slate roofs grouped around the abbey church of St. André, which has been turned into a Centre for Contemporary Art.

 

·        Plateau de Millevaches :

 

Wildflower footpaths through the Longeyroux peat bog, with descriptions of the biotope plants encountered on the way.

 

·        The Upper Valley of the Dordogne :

 

Take a ride in a gabare (barge), a flat-sided boat used to transport goods down to the Bordeaux region. Nowadays, this boat is a way to discover the natural heritage of the valley and to listen to the history of those intrepid navigators, the gabariers (bargees).

The Richard the Lionheart route

and Causse correzien

  • Ségur le Château :

One of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", the village with old noble houses dominated by the ruins of the castle.

  • Pompadour :

The capital of the Anglo-Arab horse. Chateau (visit the terraces) and hippodrome :

    • flat and steeplechase races June-September and national traditional carriage driving competition on the last weekend in August.
    • Possible visit to the stud farm and the brood mare station. For a guided visit in English, contact the Tourist Office.
    • There is the possibility, on leaving Pompadour, of following the Route de la Pomme (the Apple Route) and, depending on the season, visiting an orchard.

·         Saint-Robert :

 

It is a medieval village and one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France". Chamber music festival mid-July – mid-August. Fair and flea market on 15th August.

  • Chateau Lissac :

Lac du Causse Corrézien (100 hectares) : supervised swimming, rowing, water-skiing, pedalos, fishing and children’s play area.

The Dordogne Valley

and medieval villages

·        Argentat :

 

Stroll along the banks of the Dordogne - houses with turrets and slate roofs.

 

·        Beaulieu Sur Dordogne :

 

o   The Limousin Riviera : medieval alleyways.

o   Abbey church : tympanum.

o   For the more athletic, go down the river in a canoe.

 

·        Collonges La Rouge :

 

A village built of handsome red sandstone and one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France".

 

·        Curemonte :

 

On its rocky outcrop, it is one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France": military buildings, chateaux and noble houses of the 16th and 17th centuries. It is possible to take the path to visit the cooperative wine cellar of Branceilles, where the "Mille et une Pierres" (Thousand and One Stones) wine is produced.

 

·        Turenne:

 

A fortress, townhouses, chapels and collegiate churches.

 

·        The caves of la Fage :

 

Two sinkholes – one 25m deep, the other 10m deep. Colonnades, concretions and calcite stalactites cover the arch.

 

·        Aubazine :

 

Abbey church of a Cistercian abbey with the tomb of Etienne d’Obazine. Monks’ Canal: a signposted route for 1.5 km.

 

·        Coiroux Tourist Centre :

 

80-hectare lake, Coiroux golf course: 18-hole par 72, 6042m.

Brive la Gaillarde

and surrounding area

 

It is a welcoming, dynamic and enterprising town of the southwest, which has become well-known thanks to the success of its rugby team. For a guided visit in English, contact the Tourist Office.

- The Musée Labenche is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture. Among its collections, there are the six Mortlake tapestries (17th century)

- The Distillerie Denoix is the oldest distiller of spirits in France (1839). As well as its famous "walnut liqueur", the company also makes "violet mustard". The Brive Planchetorte is a 18-hole par 71 golf course, 5847 m.

- Market days : Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

  • Donzenac :

     The "Pans de Trevassac" is a slate quarry. Underground museum: slate quarry tools and techniques.

  • Uzerche :

A rocky outcrop dominating the Vezère valley, with old, turreted houses and an abbey church.
